Relay For Life® is a fun-filled overnight event designed to bring together those who have been touched by cancer in our community. At the event, we celebrate survivorship and raise money to help the American Cancer Society in its mission to save lives, help those who have been touched by cancer, and empower individuals to fight back. During the event, teams of people gather at schools, fairgrounds, or parks and take turns walking or running laps. Each team tries to keep at least one team member on the track at all times.
The first Relay for Life at USC was held in 2005. The Nu Upsilon Chapter was the only Black Student Organization represented amongst the participants and has remained so even in 2007. In 2006, Nu Upsilon was the only Black Student Organization to be a member of the planning committee for the event. This year, Nu Upsilon’s goal was to raise $1000 for the American Cancer Society. The chapter exceeded its goal, raising a total of $1375.00 for the event. Brothers were on present on Cromwell Field for a total of 24 hours and were honored with the award for the “Best Decorated Tent.” USC’s Relay for Life raised a total of $85,797.
Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. has a national partnership with the American Cancer Society. As a result, Sigmas from coast to coast participate in Relay for Life. One of the things that made the 2007 Relay for Life so special for the Nu Upsilon Chapter was the fact that we walked with the Alexander Science Center, a local school that the chapter has partnered with in the USC area. Over 25 students were able to participate in the day’s events and realize how community service and giving can make an impact in the lives of others.
“Culture for Service and Service for Humanity.” This is the motto of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. The Nu Upsilon Chapter at USC continuously exemplifies this motto, whether by raising its “kids” or by raising money for a good cause. We go where the work needs to be done!
